Kyphoplasty
The purpose of kyphoplasty is to reduce back pain, correct angular deformity, restore vertebral body height, and stabilize the fracture caused by VCFs.
Kyphoplasty Process
- Through two 1-cm incisions, working cannulas are inserted bilaterally into the fractured vertebral body. A bone biopsy may be obtained at this time if desired. Two inflatable bone tamps (IBTs) are inserted through the cannulas.
- The IBTs, or balloons, are inflated, attempting to elevate the endplates and correct vertebral body deformity and angular deformity.
- Once the vertebra is in the correct position, the balloons are deflated and removed, leaving cavities within the vertebral body.
- The cavities are filled with bone cement using a controlled and low pressure technique, creating an internal cast and stabilizing the fracture.
