Back Pain? It May Be a Compression Fracture.

Back Pain may be caused by fractures within the bones that make up your spine. Up to 1.4 million people worldwide per year get Vertebral Compression Fractures, but more than 2/3 of these fractures go undiagnosed.

As we get older, our bones become more porous and can fracture more easily. These fractures may be very tiny but over time can cause the vertebra (the bones of your spine) to compress and settle down on to nerves and cause pain in your back. If you’ve lost height as you’ve gotten older, you may have compression fractures now, even if you have no pain.

Dr. Hongbo Liu of Innovative Spine may have the solution for your Vertebral Compression Fractures, WITHOUT going to a hospital! Instant relief is often found from spinal fractures with Kyphoplasty, an in-office procedure that injects bone cement to quickly restore height to your bones, freeing nerves from pressure and pain. This procedure is fast and delivers quick results! Contact our office to schedule an appointment and let us deliver a customized treatment plan specifically for you and your back and neck pain issues.

Kyphoplasty

The purpose of kyphoplasty is to reduce back pain, correct angular deformity, restore vertebral body height, and stabilize the fracture caused by VCFs.

Kyphoplasty Process

  1. Through two 1-cm incisions, working cannulas are inserted bilaterally into the fractured vertebral body.  A bone biopsy may be obtained at this time if desired. Two inflatable bone tamps (IBTs) are inserted through the cannulas.
  2. The IBTs, or balloons, are inflated, attempting to elevate the endplates and correct vertebral body deformity and angular deformity.
  3. Once the vertebra is in the correct position, the balloons are deflated and removed, leaving cavities within the vertebral body.
  4. The cavities are filled with bone cement using a controlled and low pressure technique, creating an internal cast and stabilizing the fracture.
