Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is a technique using small incisions to gain access to the spine to treat spine problems with less retraction on the muscles and less dissection to the surrounding tissues. MISS procedures are performed through one or more small incisions through which tubular retractors or an endoscope is inserted. Tubular retractors are used to hold the muscles open and then specialized instruments are used to access the surgical site through the tubular retractor to remove bone or disk materials or conduct spine fusion. The advantages of MISS include small incisions, less damage to surrounding tissues, less blood loss, less pain, quicker healing and shorter hospital stay.
